Franklin appears here in his role as one of the American plenipotentiaries at the French court, a detail the title itself highlights and that set him apart from the many other images of him circulating in the late 1770s. The engraving is after a portrait by Cochin, and Pollard's plate was issued in Newcastle upon Tyne by the bookseller T. Robson around 1780. It was made as an illustration for the Reverend James Murray's multi-volume history of the war in America, where it faced page 49 of the first volume. Its appearance in a book of this kind shows how eagerly British provincial publishers followed the American conflict and its diplomacy in Paris.
