This 1782 etching, titled simply as a portrait of Benjamin Franklin with the engraver's name, J. Pelicier, was made while Franklin was serving as an American commissioner in Paris. He was negotiating the diplomacy that led to the 1783 peace treaty ending the Revolutionary War. His reputation as a scientist, writer and printer had made him a celebrity in France, and printmakers there produced his likeness for a public eager to see the American envoy. The print offers a useful view of how that fame was visualized during his years abroad.
