This engraving reproduces a sculpted likeness of Benjamin Franklin by an artist named Goldar, rather than a drawing made from life. It appeared in London in September 1785 as a plate in John Andrews' *History of the War with America, France, Spain, and Holland*, published by J. Fielding in 1785 and 1786. Franklin had been the American envoy in Paris, where he helped win the French alliance that proved decisive, and he was one of the negotiators of the 1783 peace that ended the war. The plate shows how much British readers of the period were interested in the American statesman who had shaped the conflict from across the Atlantic.
