This engraving identifies Franklin as envoy from the American Congress to the French Court, a diplomatic title that sets it apart from the many portraits that show him as a printer or natural philosopher. It was published in 1780 as a plate in *An Impartial History of the War in America*, a London and Carlisle book that covered the conflict through the end of 1779. By then Franklin had spent several years in Paris, where he helped secure the 1778 Franco-American alliance that brought French money, ships and troops into the war. The print is a reminder that his reputation in France was as much political as personal.
