Among the many likenesses of Benjamin Franklin in circulation, this etching stands out for its link to a specific object: its design follows the medal made by the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres in 1778, the porcelain works that produced the French royal medal portraits. The print appeared as an illustration in the second volume of "An Impartial History of the War in America," published in Boston in 1781, when Franklin was serving as America's ambassador at the French court and the alliance with France was central to the Patriot cause. Engraved by J. Norman, it shows how a French-made image of the statesman was carried back into American print culture during the war.
