Benjamin Franklin appears here in an engraved frontispiece that the Boston magazine ran in its January 1784 issue, engraved by J. Norman after a portrait by Jean-Baptiste Cochin. The Latin motto beneath the title, "Eripuit coelo fulmen sceptrumque tyrannis" ("He snatched lightning from the sky and the scepter from tyrants"), was a line on Franklin's achievements that circulated widely in the 1770s and 1780s. Printed in Boston while Franklin was serving as a diplomat in France, the portrait shows how American readers were celebrating him as a symbol of both scientific learning and the Revolution.
