The title of this 1783 portrait spells Benjamin Franklin's first name "Benyamin," a misspelling the catalog preserves with a [sic]. Engraved likenesses of Franklin circulated widely in the 1780s, when he was in France serving as American minister. That year he helped conclude the negotiations that ended the Revolutionary War, and European printmakers eagerly issued his image to a public curious about the American envoy. Made by etching and engraving, the print is listed in a checklist of Revolutionary-era graphics, which places it among the many images that shaped how people pictured the war's leaders.
