Engraved by P.R. Maverick at his address on Liberty Street in New York, this portrait of Benjamin Franklin dates from about 1794, four years after the statesman's death in 1790. Franklin had become one of the most recognizable figures of the Revolution and the young republic, and engravers continued to reproduce his likeness for years afterward. Prints like this one kept his face before the public long after he had left public life. It is worth noticing how a commercial engraver in New York could draw on an older likeness to meet demand for a national figure who had already become a symbol.
