Currier's New York shop issued this hand-colored 1847 lithograph of Benjamin Franklin under the title "The statesman and philosopher," a label that points to the two sides of his reputation. Franklin began as a Philadelphia printer, published *Poor Richard's Almanack*, and later earned fame for his electrical experiments, his diplomacy in France, and his role in the Declaration of Independence. Inexpensive prints like this one reached a broad middle-class public, helping make Franklin's face familiar in American homes well into the nineteenth century.
