Benjamin Franklin appears here in the two roles the title names, statesman and philosopher, in a hand-colored lithograph issued by N. Currier in New York in 1847. Franklin was a printer by trade who became a celebrated scientist, diplomat, and signer of the Declaration of Independence, so a portrait of him suited buyers who wanted patriotic heroes on their walls. Hand coloring, applied to each sheet by workers, gave prints from this period their bright, individual look.
