Rather than a portrait, this 1887 Boston engraving by O. Pelton gathers Benjamin Franklin's maxims onto a single sheet, borrowing the title of "Poor Richard," the persona Franklin used for his almanac. That almanac, printed in Philadelphia from 1732 to 1758, carried proverbs on thrift, hard work and temperance that became part of everyday American speech. Issued more than ninety years after Franklin's death in 1790, the sheet shows how late nineteenth-century Americans looked back on him as a model of self-improvement. The Library of Congress holds the print, which was shown in its American Treasures exhibition in 2003 and 2004.
