Franklin is shown here in an oval frame, the format engravers often used for portraits meant for books, frontispieces and printed sets of notable men. Dated 1780, the image appeared while Franklin was serving as the American minister to France, where he was then working to secure French money, troops and naval support for the Revolutionary War. Portraits like this one circulated widely in Europe and America, helping to build his reputation as a statesman, scientist and printer. Look at the fine parallel lines of the engraving, which give the face its soft shading.
