An oval engraved portrait with a printed inscription sets this sitter apart from the many images of Benjamin Franklin in circulation: the lettering beneath the oval is part of the design, so the picture was meant to be read as well as looked at. Franklin was a printer, publisher and diplomat whose face was reproduced widely in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and engraved likenesses like this one carried his image into homes, schoolrooms and print shops. Note the oval framing, a format popular for portrait prints of the period, and the crisp line work that engravers used to suggest texture in hair and clothing.
