Franklin is shown seated beside a globe and a stack of books, a pairing that signals the learned, worldly figure he cultivated across Europe and America. Engraved portraits like this one circulated widely in the late eighteenth century, when Franklin was known as a printer, scientist and diplomat as well as a statesman. The globe points to his far-ranging interests and his years abroad, while the books stand for the reading and writing that fed his reputation. Worth noticing is how the engraver used these props to present Franklin as a thinker first and a politician second.
