Benjamin Franklin appears at a hand printing press in this scene, the trade that took him from Boston to Philadelphia in the 1720s. The picture is a photographic reproduction of a painting by Charles E. Mills, copyrighted by the Detroit Publishing Company around 1914, when such reproductions of historical subjects were widely sold. Franklin's Philadelphia shop later produced the *Pennsylvania Gazette* and *Poor Richard's Almanack*, which made the press a central tool of colonial public debate.
