Addressed to the residents of Poughkeepsie, New York, this lithograph asks them to give up their books for "our boys," and its slogan, "No days are bookless days," turns that request into a daily habit. During the First World War, the American Library Association and related groups gathered reading material for servicemen in training camps and overseas, so the poster reflects a national effort carried out in local communities. F. R. Booth made the design in 1918, the final year of the war, when such drives were common. Posters like this one show how civilian volunteers at home took part in the war effort.
