Under the slogan "Books are weapons in the war of ideas," this 1942 color poster takes its subject from the book burnings staged in Germany in 1933, when students and Nazi officials set piles of volumes by banned authors on fire. The Office of War Information, created that same year to coordinate government messaging, used the image to argue that the printed word was a tool of resistance and that free expression was worth defending. Designed by S. Broder and printed by the Government Printing Office, it is one of a series of wartime posters that framed the fight against fascism as a contest over ideas as well as armies.
