This lithograph is the first in a series issued by the Massachusetts Library War Council, and it asks readers to "banish lonely hours in camp" by giving money for books. Its slogan, "A million dollars for a million books for a million men," sums up the campaign. The text explains that the War Department had appointed the Library War Council through the American Library Association to raise a million dollars during Camp Library Week, September 24 to 30, to build and maintain libraries at training camps and cantonments. The poster shows how the wartime home front was asked to support troops' morale through reading, and it reflects the era's broad push for donated books.
