This print reproduces a painting that its record describes as the last portrait made of Benjamin Franklin during his lifetime, completed in 1787, when he was in his early eighties. That year he was also taking part in the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, and he died in 1790. The painting's original is held by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. The photographic copy was made around 1913 by the Detroit Publishing Co., a firm known for reproducing images of American places and art, so the print shows how a late-eighteenth-century likeness was circulated to a wide audience in the early twentieth century.
