This is a 1962 color photograph of an oil portrait of Benjamin Franklin, painted in 1767, when he was living in London as a colonial agent for Pennsylvania and other colonies. He spent much of the 1760s there lobbying Parliament and the Crown, including during the furor over the Stamp Act. The painting shows him as a sober, well-dressed statesman in his early sixties, far from the folksy printer of popular legend. Because the record describes a photograph of a painting, the image preserves the artwork as a 1960s reproduction, which is a useful reminder that many of the most familiar images of Franklin come from paintings made during his long years abroad.
