Benjamin Franklin, the printer, writer, and scientist, is the subject of this print. Although the gallery files it under presidents, Franklin never held that office. He is better remembered as a Founding Father who helped draft the Declaration of Independence and who served as the first American minister to France. The Library's shelflist card gives no date and associates the print with a name, Edwin, David, but that attribution has not been verified. Its exact origin and period remain uncertain, so it is best read as a general portrait of a figure central to the American Revolution.
