Rather than a painted original, this is an 1868 engraving by H.B. Hall, reproducing a portrait that Duplessis painted from life in 1783 while Franklin was living at Passy, outside Paris. That year Franklin was finishing his work as American envoy to France, and in September he signed the Treaty of Paris, which ended the Revolutionary War. The Duplessis likeness, with its plain dress and steady gaze, became one of the most reproduced images of Franklin, and engravings like this one carried it to a wide public long after his death.
