Milk Street in Boston is where Benjamin Franklin was born in 1706, in a house that also held his father Josiah's soap and candle business. Franklin was the fifteenth of seventeen children, and he left Boston as a teenager to apprentice with his brother James, a printer. The original house did not survive the Great Boston Fire of 1810, which destroyed much of the surrounding district, so later generations marked the site to honor the man who became a printer, scientist and statesman.
