Boston's Franklin Technical Institute grew out of a bequest in Benjamin Franklin's 1790 will, which set aside money in Boston and Philadelphia to be lent to young artisans and allowed to accumulate for a century. When the Boston fund matured in the early twentieth century, it helped establish the Franklin Union, a school for practical trades and technical skills, so the building pictured here carries Franklin's name as both a memorial and a working institution. The title's phrase "The Gift of Benjamin Franklin" points to that long-delayed endowment, a rare case of an eighteenth-century founder shaping education more than a hundred years after his death.
