Marble portraits of Benjamin Franklin were a popular subject for American sculptors in the early twentieth century, and this one, modeled about 1906 by William Couper, shows the statesman carved in stone. Couper, a Virginia-born sculptor, spent much of his career in Florence, where skilled Italian carvers could turn a clay or plaster model into finished marble. By then Franklin, a printer, scientist and envoy to France, was one of the most recognizable founders of the nation, and his likeness appeared often in civic and public settings. The piece is worth noticing for how it links a modern portrait to the older workshop tradition of marble carving.
