The raised hand sets this marble statue apart from the many seated or still Franklin likenesses, suggesting a speaker addressing a crowd or making a point. Franklin never held the presidency of the United States, but he was a central figure in the founding era. He helped draft the Declaration of Independence, served as minister to France during the Revolution, and signed the Treaty of Paris in 1783. Sculptors in the 19th and early 20th centuries often used such gestures to present him as a statesman, printer and inventor at once.
