Franklin never held the presidency, though this gallery files him under that heading, and this bronze shows him in a relaxed, seated pose on a bench rather than in the formal dress of a statesman. Sculptors often used the bench as a way to invite passersby to sit beside him, a deliberate choice that made a founder who had been a printer, postmaster, scientist, diplomat, and signer of the Declaration of Independence seem approachable. Bronze figures like this were common in American cities from the late 19th century onward, when communities raised monuments to their civic heroes.
