Painted in France, where Franklin served as American minister for much of the Revolutionary War, this portrait by Joseph Siffred Duplessis shows him in a fur cap and plain dress rather than the powdered wig expected at European courts. Duplessis, a painter working in the orbit of the French court, made several versions of Franklin's likeness, and the unpowdered, informal look became an image of American simplicity that circulated widely in France and beyond. The picture dates to around 1785, the year Franklin left France and returned to Philadelphia, and the sitter's deliberately modest appearance is worth noticing.
