The belfry at Acoma Pueblo, a bell tower attached to the mission church on a sandstone mesa in west-central New Mexico, is the subject here, and Edward S. Curtis turned his camera on the building rather than on the people around it. Spanish Franciscans established the mission in the early seventeenth century, and its adobe walls and timber framing show how colonial religious architecture took shape on a community that had lived on the mesa long before. Curtis made the photograph around 1905 for *The North American Indian*, where it appeared as plate 564 in a supplement volume. Its focus on structure gives it a documentary character that is worth noticing.
