The Porte Saint-Martin, one of the old gates on Paris's northern boundary, is the setting here, and this lithograph shows the barricades thrown up there during the uprising of 28 July 1830. The print was made in 1830 by a lithographer named Guerrier and was issued from a shop on the Cloître des Bernardins, a quarter of the city close to the river. The July Revolution of that summer overthrew the restored Bourbon monarch Charles X, and images like this one helped the public follow street fighting that was otherwise hard to see from a distance.
