What sets this picture apart is its pairing of two men: army surgeon William Beaumont and Alexis St. Martin, a young French Canadian voyageur. In 1822, a musket accident at Fort Mackinac left St. Martin with a wound that healed into a permanent opening into his stomach. Beaumont treated him over the following years and used that opening to watch digestion directly, publishing his findings in 1833. Dean Cornwell, a painter and member of the National Academy of Design, made this 1938 work, and the color halftone reproduction carries his painterly approach to the scene.
