Dust storms rolling across Kansas in the mid-1930s were among the most striking features of the Dust Bowl, the drought-stricken stretch of the southern Plains where years of dry weather and plowed-up grassland left topsoil loose and easily lifted by wind. Storms of this kind, often called black blizzards, could turn midday into darkness, bury fences and farmhouses in drifts of silt, and force families to seal their windows with wet cloth. The record dates the picture to 1934 or 1935, a period when the scale of the catastrophe drove many farmers off their land.
