Spokane, Washington, in 1903 was a young city of railroads, mills, and mining money. Its growth rested on the Spokane River falls, which powered flour and lumber mills, and on its position as a supply and rail center for the mining districts of Idaho and Montana. The city had been renamed from Spokane Falls in 1891, and it was still rebuilding from the August 1889 fire that destroyed much of its business district. Brick and stone blocks replaced the frame buildings lost in that blaze, giving downtown the solid look that a panoramic view of the city would have shown. Residents of the day knew Spokane as a booming western gateway, a place where railroad lines, river power, and civic ambition met.
