The Library of Congress's record names this as a funeral for Warren G. Harding, the 29th president, who died in office in August 1923. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., commercial studio that documented the city and its public events in the 1910s and 1920s, made the original glass negative. Mourners and officials gathered in the capital for the funeral, and the company's work from that period captures the formal crowds and ceremony of the national mourning. The glass plate shows streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of its original coating, which are visible traces of its age.
