This glass negative records the playing of "Taps," the bugle call traditionally sounded at the close of a military funeral, for President Warren G. Harding, who died in San Francisco on August 2, 1923. The date in the catalog record, August 10, 1923, places the image during the days when Harding's funeral and burial observances were taking place in Washington and beyond. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington life in the early twentieth century, made the negative. The title comes from data the company wrote on the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified. Visible streaks and blemishes are typical of deterioration in the original glass coatings.
