This glass negative shows the funeral of President Warren G. Harding, who died suddenly in San Francisco in August 1923 while on a western speaking tour. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio that documented the city's public life for decades, made the image, and the record dates it to 1923 based on its neighboring negatives. Harding's death brought an outpouring of public grief, and the capital's ceremonies drew large crowds before his burial in Marion, Ohio. Viewers should note the streaks and blemishes across the glass, which come from the natural breakdown of the original coating over time.
