Calvin Coolidge, who had taken office only months earlier after Warren Harding's death, appears in this view at the funeral of Woodrow Wilson on February 6, 1924. Wilson, who led the country through World War I and fought for the League of Nations, had died three days before the service in Washington. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio whose glass negatives recorded the city's public life in the early twentieth century. Streaks and small blemishes on the original glass reflect the gradual deterioration of its coatings over time.
