Calvin Coolidge, who had become president in August 1923 after the death of Warren G. Harding, is the figure this glass negative records, shot aboard the presidential yacht USS Mayflower on September 15 of that year. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented national officials and events in the early twentieth century, made the exposure, and the plate later came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Its title, taken from the negative sleeve, is unverified, so the date and setting are best read as the studio's own record. Visible streaks and blemishes come from deterioration of the original coating, which is typical of glass plates of this age.
