A glass negative dated August 31, 1923, carries the title "Coolidge," though the Library of Congress notes that the title comes from unverified data written by the National Photo Company. Coolidge had become president only weeks earlier, after Warren G. Harding's death on August 2, so the plate captures a new administration still taking shape. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio active from about 1907 to 1932, recorded officials, public figures and daily life in the capital, and its glass plates are now valued as a detailed record of that era. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes, which come from the natural breakdown of the original emulsion over time.
