Calvin Coolidge's reputation for reserve is the subject here, and the title, written by the National Photo Company on the negative, promises a rare display of his smile. Coolidge took office in August 1923 after Warren G. Harding's death, and the press often described him as a man of few words and fewer expressions, so a picture singled out for its smile would have stood out. The National Photo Company was a Washington, D.C., commercial studio that documented officials and city life in the early twentieth century. The date is bracketed because it is inferred from neighboring negatives, and the streaks on the glass come from natural deterioration of the original coating.
