This glass negative records Calvin Coolidge, whose record is dated August 31, 1923, less than a month after he succeeded Warren G. Harding as president following Harding's death on August 2. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio that documented government officials and public events in the 1910s and 1920s, made the image. Its archive is a valuable record of the capital in those years. Look for the streaks and blemishes on the glass, which the catalog attributes to deterioration of the original coatings.
