Dated August 9, 1923, this glass negative shows President Calvin Coolidge with Sgt. Michael A. Donaldson, though the title comes from data the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified. The date falls a week after Coolidge succeeded Warren G. Harding, who died on August 2, 1923, so the sitting came in the first days of his presidency. The National Photo Company, based in Washington, D.C., recorded officials and public events on glass plates like this one, and the streaks and blemishes on the surface reflect the natural deterioration of the original coatings.
