Few subjects in this set are as specific as a pair of sculpted busts of Calvin Coolidge, the Vermont lawyer who rose from Massachusetts politics to the vice presidency and then the presidency in 1923. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the capital's officials, public events and monuments in the early twentieth century, likely made the picture for use in print or the company's own files. The title comes from the studio's own notes and has not been independently verified, so the subject is best read as recorded. The glass plate shows streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of its original coating, which is common in negatives of this age.
