Rather than the whole hull, this negative frames the tall masts of the USS *Constitution*, with their spars and rigging rising against the sky. Launched in Boston in 1797, the frigate earned the nickname "Old Ironsides" after cannonballs reportedly bounced off her oak hull during her 1812 battle with the British warship *Guerriere*. By the time this picture was made, roughly 1920 to 1950, the ship had become a preserved national symbol, which helps explain why photographers kept returning to her masts. The 4 by 5 inch nitrate negative captures fine detail in the lines of rope and wood.
