USS Constitution's victory over HMS Guerriere on August 19, 1812, is the event this engraving commemorates, and it marked one of the first major American naval triumphs of the War of 1812. The frigate's crew watched the British ship's masts fall during a fight off Nova Scotia, and the nickname "Old Ironsides" reportedly came from the way round shot bounced off her oak hull. Engravings like this one circulated widely in the years after the battle, turning a single ship action into a national symbol at a time when the young republic badly needed good news. The ship is now preserved at the Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston, where visitors can still see the frigate that made that day famous.
