This ink and wash drawing shows the frigate *Constitution* in the second of two views, paired with a sketch of the British frigate *Java*, the ship it defeated off Brazil on December 29, 1812. That victory, along with the earlier win over HMS *Guerriere* in August 1812, made the ship a national hero and earned it the nickname "Old Ironsides." The drawing is dated about 1813 and belongs to the Marian S. Carson Collection at the Library of Congress. Its maker is not named in the record, but its subject reflects the naval triumphs that drew public attention to American warships during the War of 1812.
