Few naval actions of the War of 1812 are remembered as vividly as the battle between the American frigate Constitution and the British frigate Guerriere, fought off Nova Scotia on August 19, 1812. Charles Robert Patterson's painting, preserved here in a color halftone reproduction, shows the two frigates in combat. The victory gave the young United States a much-needed morale boost, and the story goes that British shot bounced off Constitution's oak hull, earning her the nickname "Old Ironsides." The ship still floats in Boston Harbor as a museum vessel, so the scene links visitors to that early naval triumph.
