Taken from the quarterdeck, this view looks along the starboard battery, the row of cannon lined up on the ship's right side, on August 18, 1914. By then the frigate was more than a working warship. She had earned the nickname "Old Ironsides" for her victories over British frigates during the War of 1812, and she was already drawing visitors to Boston. The photograph shows the ship as a preserved relic, with her guns and deck fittings offering a direct look at how a early 19th-century fighting ship was armed.
