Moored at the Charlestown Navy Yard in 1955, USS Constitution sits in the same Boston harbor where she was built in 1797 and where she had already earned the nickname "Old Ironsides" during the War of 1812. By the mid-1950s the frigate was a working relic of the early Navy, and the yard around her had been a major shipbuilding and repair site for more than a century. This photograph documents the ship in that setting, a reminder of how close the nation's maritime past remained to its postwar present.
