Rather than a photograph of the ship, this gravure is an artist's conception of USS Constitution seen from her starboard side under full sail. Launched in 1797 in Boston, the frigate earned the nickname "Old Ironsides" in the War of 1812, when her hull shrugged off British cannon fire during her victory over HMS Guerriere. By the early 1930s, when this print appeared, the ship had become a national symbol, and the restoration work of that period helped keep her afloat as a museum ship. The print shows how the public imagined her in her fighting days.
